That Body Odour Can Kill Your Chances Of Getting A Job

I work with a great jobs website firm and I have seen a lot of fantastic resumes sit on our data base for too long waiting for that great break. So in a series of blog posts, I would be discussing some of the things that may reduce your chances of landing that great job. Many things could prevent you from getting a job; believe me, I mean those things your resume cannot reflect. For example, bad breath, poor dress sense, body odour etc.Let’s start with body odour or BO for short. This is an unpleasant smell the body gives off. According to Dr. Trisha Macnair, a health writer for bbc.co.uk, “Body odour is caused by a natural process involving sweat that occurs on the skin’s surface. Sweat is odourless, but if left on the skin, the bacteria that normally live there feed on it and break it down. This process releases chemicals that cause the unpleasant smell.” So, BO is a case of your harmless sweat haunting you.
BO can be caused by excessive sweating, bad hygiene, liver or kidney failure, diabetes, eating certain foods e.g. raw onions, and strangely psychological conditions that may cause someone to think he/she has body odour when he/she really doesn’t! Workers with bad smell often suffer from embarrassment during social interactions, anger, depression and loss of self confidence. Even when they have everything to succeed in the world, their unbalanced state of mind keeps them from achieving their goals.
Truth be told, BO can reduce productivity in a work place. Last week, a friend of mine complained of a colleague who made their office unconducive because of her smell. He described that it was so terrible that though she didn’t share the same office with him, the odour filled the hall and even sipped into his own office once his door opened. Haba! No employer wants that kind of business environment. Imagine having a receptionist or sales executive with BO, that’s a sorry case of bad business image.
But suffering from body odour does not mean the end of your career life. In fact, it should be a stimulant to gear you up to be a better, improved worker by working on your smell to create a sweet scent that can enhance your professional moves. But, how do you go about this? Here are some things you can do right within the confines of your home:
- Drink a glass of water in the morning, on an empty stomach, along with 500 mg wheat grass. The chlorophyll present in the grass will help in reducing body odour.
Apply baking soda to your armpits as well as to your feet, to reduce body odour.
- While bathing, add alcohol or white vinegar to a mug of water and use it to rinse the armpits. This will definitely help in lessening the body odour.
- One of the simple home remedies for body odour is to put a few drops of rose water in the bathtub, before taking bath. It will give you a long lasting freshness and serve as a good substitute for deodorant.
- To reduce the pH of the skin and eliminate armpit odour, one can use apple cider vinegar instead of deodorant. Put it in a mug of water and use it to rinse the armpits, while bathing.
- Take showers, at least thrice in a day, in the hot season, when one tends to sweat a lot.
- During summers, you can apply the baby powder or talc to your armpits, in place of deodorants.
- Pour some white vinegar on a cotton ball and wipe your underarms with the cotton. While the vinegar smell would fade in some time, you would remain smell-free for the rest of the day.
- Mix two drops of the tea tree oil (essential oil) and one ounce of water. Pour this in a spray-top bottle and use as a deodorant. Since tea tree is an antibacterial herb, it would act favourably in preventing body odour.
- Mix 10 drops of the essential oil in 30 ml water. Apply this mixture on the armpits to reduce body odour.
- Turnip juice is also effective in removing body odour. Grate a turnip and squeeze the grated pieces to extract the juice. Apply this juice on your underarms.
One rule guiding the above is “be consistent” even when answers are not immediate. Rome sure was not built in a day, so is that pleasant smell you crave for. So, start today and change that unpleasant rumour in the office for your good.
